Much of Calgary sits on clay-rich soils that swell when wet and shrink when dry. That cycle moves buried pipe over time, opening joints and putting bending stress on rigid materials. Combined with the city's freeze-thaw swings, it explains why laterals in older communities develop offsets and cracks rather than failing uniformly along their length.

Where the older laterals are

Inner-city communities including Bridgeland, Killarney, Mount Pleasant and parts of the southwest still have original connections that predate modern plastic pipe. Post-war and 1960s suburbs typically have clay or early plastics of variable quality. Newer communities rarely need structural repair, but they do get blockages, and a camera inspection is what distinguishes the two situations.

Front driveways and attached garages

Calgary lots commonly place a concrete driveway and attached garage over or beside the lateral's route, and rear-lane garages put a paved apron in the way at the other end. Concrete is unforgiving to reinstate and rarely matches afterwards. Where the pipe still holds its shape, a liner installed through a cleanout avoids breaking that surface; where it doesn't, pipe bursting can still keep the excavation to two pits.

Redevelopment and infill

Extensive infill development means many Calgary homeowners inherit an old service connection under a new or renovated house. If you're planning a basement development or a secondary suite, inspecting the lateral first is far cheaper than discovering a defect after the floor is finished.

Before you commission work

• Ask for a locate with depths, not just a video file
• Check whether the defect is on the private side of the connection
• Ask the contractor which section they intend to treat, and why not the whole run
• Confirm what surface restoration is included in the price
