Three ways a lateral gets replaced

Conventional open-cut excavation

A trench is dug along the pipe's route, the old line is removed and a new one is laid and backfilled. It gives full visual access, allows the grade to be reset, and is often the cheapest option on a short, shallow run in open ground. The cost driver is what sits above the pipe: interlock, concrete, a garage floor, mature planting or a retaining wall all have to be removed and rebuilt.

Pipe bursting

The new pipe follows the old alignment and is pulled in from an entry pit to an exit pit. Surface disturbance is limited to those pits plus any connection point. It suits full-length replacement where the route is clear of conflicting utilities and where the depth is workable. See how pipe bursting works.

Partial or sectional replacement

Where one length has failed and the rest of the line is sound, only that section is replaced — sometimes with the balance of the run lined afterwards.

When replacement is required rather than lining

• The pipe has collapsed, is crushed, or has separated at a joint
• Offsets are large enough that a liner could not pass or seal
• The line is back-pitched or has a sag that must be corrected by re-laying it
• Deterioration is so advanced that no reliable host pipe remains
• Additional capacity is needed and upsizing is practical

Where none of the above applies, CIPP lining is usually priced alongside replacement so you can compare disruption and cost honestly.

What to ask before you commit

• Where exactly will the pits or trench be located, and what surfaces are affected?
• Is surface restoration included in the quotation, and to what standard?
• What pipe material and diameter are proposed, and why?
• Who arranges the municipal permit and inspection?
• Will you receive camera footage of the finished line?
