What counts as trenchless sewer repair

On a residential property, the sewer lateral runs from the house to the municipal main, often beneath a driveway, walkway, front lawn or basement floor. Conventional repair digs that path open. Trenchless repair uses the pipe itself as the working route, so most of the surface above it stays where it is.

Three approaches cover most residential work in Canada:

• CIPP lining — a resin-saturated liner is installed inside the existing pipe and cured to form a new pipe within the old one.
• Pipe bursting — the old pipe is broken outward while a new pipe is pulled through the same alignment.
• Point repair — a short liner or sectional patch addresses one defect, such as a single cracked joint, rather than the whole run.

Trenchless repair versus open-cut excavation

Open-cut excavation is still the right answer in some situations: a shallow line close to the house, a section that has completely collapsed, or a pipe that has separated at a connection. What excavation adds is surface restoration — the interlock, concrete, sod and planting that has to be rebuilt afterwards. That restoration is frequently the part homeowners dislike most, and it is where trenchless methods can make the biggest difference.

Pipe conditions that suit trenchless methods

• Clay or cast-iron pipe with cracks, root intrusion or corrosion but intact alignment
• Joints that have opened slightly and allow roots or infiltration
• Sections with wear or scaling that still hold their shape
• Lines with a usable cleanout or a practical location for a small access pit

Conditions that complicate trenchless work include a fully collapsed section, significant sag or belly, severe offsets between pipe sections, and back-pitched runs where the grade itself is the problem. Lining follows the existing pipe, so it cannot correct a bad slope.

What the process typically looks like

• Camera inspection to locate and grade the defect
• Cleaning — root cutting, descaling or hydro jetting — to prepare the host pipe
• A second inspection and measurement of the run
• Installation of the liner or the new pipe
• Curing or reconnection, then a final camera check
